Ha’am invented “cultural Zionism” as a counterpoint to “political Zionism” that emphasized the flourishing of Jewish creativity over statehood. Herzl and Ha’am argued with one another to win the minds and hearts of the nascent national homeland movement. Their legacies still shape Israel and the Diaspora today.

6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tikkun Leil Shavuot: A Night Studying “Her Torah”
In Person at Temple Israel

After a short festival evening service, we will enjoy dairy treats and embark on the study of Toratah, a scholarly project by Israeli American artist Yael Kanarek that presents a “regendered” version of the Hebrew Bible by gender-reversing all characters. The result is that divine inspiration expresses itself through matriarchal, rather than patriarchal, lineage—unearthing new possibilities for people of all gender identities to examine their Judaism. This Shavuot, let’s explore what it would mean to receive Torah such as this.
