Development Director
The Development Director is a member of
Temple Israel's senior staff. The development director manages and administers all staff
and volunteer development and fundraising activities for Temple Israel. This includes
donor identification, recognition and cultivation and management of a diverse set of
fundraising initiatives. These include the Temple Israel Foundation, annual fundraisers,
annual financial commitment program, planned giving program, major gifts program, and a
2010 capital campaign. The Development Director will serve as staff liaison to fundraising
committees and sub-committees.
Main
Responsibilities/Activities/Duties:
Development Office Infrastructure
Conceive, establish, and
maintain a staff and volunteer organizational structure to effectively accomplish
development goals and objectives; recruit, employ, train, supervise, and evaluate
volunteers and development assistant
Hire part time administrative
assistant for fundraising department
Create office systems to
support all development projects and operations
Manage donor and gift
record keeping, and acknowledgment programs, research activities, and reports
as needed
Provide staff support
to development committee and all subcommittees
Maintains files on
all funds; connects with fund donors as necessary; works with executive director
to solicit, set up and follow up on fund details
Temple Israel Foundation
In consultation with Board, senior staff and Clergy, recruit new Foundation
Board members
Establish regular schedule of Foundation Board meetings
Create and coordinate
a process and activities to gather congregant input regarding the Temple's
future and how the Foundation can sustain that future
Establish an endowment
fundraising goal
Coordinate and support
all Foundation activities
Work with Foundation
Board members, Clergy and Executive Director to identify, cultivate, solicit
and recognize donors
Annual Fundraising
Activities
Work with
executive director and speaker event sub-committee to identify and solicit
underwriters, sponsors, co-sponsors and benefactors for annual speaker
program
Examine annual
Yom Kippur appeal and, in consultation with development committee, determine
possibilities for expansion of this annual appeal
Oversee annual
Yom Kippur appeal
Work with executive
director and annual financial commitment committee to strengthen AFC program,
build the infrastructure and increase annual financial commitments
Maintain a donor
recognition program which includes plaques, special events and programs
Assists with grant
research and writing
Capital Campaign
Establish a process
for "town hall meetings", one-on-one conversations and written surveys to determine
feasibility, ascertain congregant needs and determine capital campaign areas of
focus and goals
Work with communications
director to create marketing materials
Along with the development
committee and the executive director, manage and oversee the capital campaign by
developing effective, appropriate and innovative fund-raising strategies
Organize and motivate
staff, Board, Development Committee and volunteers
Act as an energizer
and facilitator to the Board and the Development Committee and ensure that the
solicitors move forward. Coordinate an effective and timely follow-up on all
solicitations
Planned Giving Program
In conjunction with
other fundraising activities, develop a planned giving program
Work with the development
committee to identify, solicit and recognize donors able to provide a planned gift
to Temple Israe
Maintain communication
with current Temple Israel planned givers
The Director of Development
should achieve the following major objectives during the first twelve months:
Thoroughly learn the Synagogue's
history, culture, tradition and operations and understand the funding requirements of
all segments of the institution
Establish a collegial and
supportive working relationship with Rabbis, Cantor, Executive Director, administrative
staff and other staff members
Develop a working relationship
with the members of the Development Committee and the Board of Directors. Evaluate and
establish a mechanism to facilitate fund-raising activities. Know the congregation,
its constituents, structure and personalities
Establish procedures and
mechanisms for the new development office.
Make connections to a broad
spectrum of congregants
Review current fundraising
activities of Temple Israel and other congregations; develop a fundraising plan
and strategy for the next Synagogue year
Structure and organize
a complete plan of nurturing and stewardship for our higher level members and
existing and potential donors
Educate the
congregation as to the current and future fund-raising needs of the Synagogue;
create the expectation of solicitation within the congregation
Working with the
Development Committee, implement the Development Plan that includes annual
giving, planned giving and special projects
Plan for a 2010
Capital Campaign
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree
or equivalent
At least 3-to-5
years' of proven experience in major gifts and donor cultivation programs
with a reputation for quality and excellence
Broad knowledge
and/or experience in all aspects of a well-rounded development program
including annual and major gift campaigns, planned giving, case development
and volunteer involvement
Preference for
advanced skills with relational databases and spreadsheets
Talented
communicator: purposeful writer and effective speaker
Adept self
motivator
Ability to
work some evenings and weekends
Familiarity with
the Jewish community and/or have knowledge of Judaism/Jewish
culture.
The ability to
create, organize and maintain efficient operational procedures
The ability to
work collaboratively with senior staff, the Board of Directors, clergy,
volunteers, other staff
