Barry Abelson attended the Hartt College of Music at the University
of Hartford where he performed in opera and concert. Upon
completing his studies at Hartt, he performed at the Temple
University Summer Music Festival and then on to a national
tour with the Boris Goldovsky Opera Theatre. In 1973 he entered
Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion - School
of Sacred Music in New York, beginning the five-year Cantorial
Program. Before coming to Temple Israel, he was at Temple
Emanu-El in Montreal, one of the leading congregations in
Canada. Cantor Abelson has been with Temple Israel since 1985.
He is a member of the American Conference of Cantors and president
of the Minnesota Cantors Association. He is married to Margo,
who has taught in the Temple Israel Nursery School since 1986.
They have two adult children - Stephen and Joanne.
